Xenoblade Chronicles 2 affinity is the battle bond shared between a Driver and an equipped Blade. It is represented by an Ether link between them during combat. The link begins as a blue line, becomes brighter as affinity rises, and turns gold at MAX affinity.

Affinity is not the same as Trust. Affinity is a temporary combat value that changes during a battle, while Trust is a longer-term relationship rank that influences how quickly affinity is gained or lost. Raising Trust makes combat affinity easier to maintain and is also important for completing a Blade’s Affinity Chart.

Affinity directly affects combat performance. As the link strengthens, the Driver and Blade gain better movement, recharge, critical hit, and Special damage performance. At MAX, the Driver can also charge a Level IV Special after waiting briefly without using Arts.

Affinity is calculated on a scale from 0 to 1000. Most Blades begin around the Medium range, but each Blade’s base value can vary according to personality. Some rare characters begin with High affinity, while certain Common Blades may start lower.

The most important target is MAX affinity. Reaching 1000 activates the strongest benefits, but the golden link can remain active as long as affinity does not fall below the Very High threshold. This gives you a practical buffer after reaching MAX.

At MAX affinity, Arts and Specials are temporarily upgraded to the next level. This is the only route to Level 6 Battle Arts and Blade Specials: use a Level 5 Art or Special while the gold affinity link is active.

Affinity also changes how safely a Blade can operate. At MIN affinity, the link disappears, the Special gauge is emptied, and the Blade cannot activate Blade Arts. The Driver takes more damage, deals less damage, cannot guard, and cannot land critical hits until the bond recovers.

The safest method is to remain close to the active Blade and keep contributing to the fight. Passive affinity increases every second while the Driver remains linked and in range. Driver Arts, successful Button Challenges, Specials, and combo finishers provide larger bursts.

Many of these actions affect the entire party, making Blade and Driver Combos especially valuable when several Blades need affinity at once. Defeating an enemy also grants a party-wide increase, although relying only on enemy defeats is slower than actively using Specials and finishers.

Button Challenges are particularly useful because higher-quality results generate more affinity. An Excellent result is substantially better than a Good result, so practice the timing rather than skipping the challenge.

Enemy reactions and Blade Combos can reduce affinity for the party. A Driver being incapacitated causes a major loss, and an Affinity Down debuff can remove a large portion of the current value. Keep healing and positioning under control when fighting enemies that frequently inflict reactions.

Completing Affinity Charts requires Trust, not just the temporary affinity value shown during combat. The most efficient approach is to equip pouch items repeatedly while standing near a shop that sells the selected item.

Every Blade and Driver has preferred item types and specific liked items. However, liked items trigger extra dialogue before the item is equipped. That dialogue does not increase the Trust gained, so it slows down repeated use. For rapid farming, choose a high-value item that avoids unnecessary dialogue from the Blades and Drivers currently equipped.

The recommended high-value items can provide 21 Trust per use. The No Poncho and Fragrant Stallo are especially useful because they can be consumed quickly without a dialogue cue in the recommended setup. Item availability depends on shop development, story progress, and completed Merc Missions.

The No Poncho and Fragrant Stallo are associated with shops in Fonsett Village at a high development level. If they are missing, continue progressing the story, raise the area’s development level, and complete related Merc Missions.

Pouch item capacity is a major quality-of-life factor. More Lifestyle capacity means fewer interruptions while farming Trust. Deeds from upgraded shops can increase the base capacity by up to 30 across the relevant purchases.

Several useful Deeds come from shops connected to Argentum and Tantal. The Nopon Hobby Store in Argentum is an early option. Proximo Cosmetics and Pla Patiss in Tantal provide additional capacity improvements after their requirements are met.

To make the process faster, use a Driver who can access more Blades. Rex can help reorganize party Blades and temporarily place target Blades on him for pouch item consumption. This is useful when another Driver has locked Blades that would otherwise trigger extra dialogue or prevent a clean setup.

A practical preparation sequence is:

• Identify the Blade or group of Blades whose Trust you want to raise.
• Move them to a Driver with convenient Blade access.
• Check which pouch item avoids dialogue for the current party.
• Stand directly beside the relevant shop.
• Buy a large supply before beginning repeated use.
• Increase Lifestyle capacity through available Deeds.

Trust level influences affinity gains and losses, so improving Trust makes future combat more forgiving. Blade personality also matters. Pyra and Mythra both begin with a base affinity of 500, while Mythra has a positive affinity gain modifier and a higher loss modifier.

Equipment, Aux Cores, pouch items, Blade skills, and Special effects can further change affinity behavior. Cheer Treat increases affinity after winning a Special Button Challenge. Hunter’s Chemistry grants a starting party affinity increase when beginning a battle with initiative. Some Poppi Parts and Blade abilities also provide specialized affinity bonuses.

For general exploration, focus on keeping the link active and using Specials naturally. For Affinity Chart completion, switch to the pouch item loop because combat alone is much slower for raising Trust across many Blades.
